Abstract:

The National Indigenous Communities Information Directory (NICID) is a directory of Indigenous Communities across Australia. It is an amalgamation of several disparate Indigenous Communities databases sourced from both Government agencies and private sector companies.

The National Indigenous Communities Information Directory is intended to provide users with the ability to view ALL of the indigenous communities via a WEB browser and not to replace the individual database held by the various agencies or companies.

Data quality

Lineage:

The National Indigenous Communities Information Directory (NICID) is a directory of some 1800 communities throughout Australia. The directory was compiled by the Spatial Division of Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) from information supplied by the NT Department of Lands, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Housing, Infrastructure, Health and Heritage Branch of the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders Commission (ATSIC) and the Regional Offices of Sinclair Knight Merz. The directory is accessed through WEB browser software and allows selections to be made on the data both graphically and textually. The dataset includes a number of feature attributes including ABS Identifier, Community Name, Alternative Names and Positional Accuracy.

Positional accuracy:

The location of each community was determined by accepting the best available data from the various databases used to compile the Directory, ie whether the community was located using coordinates from a Global Positioning System, surveyed using local coordinates or scaled off a map. It is expected that the location of some of the communities will be improved after receiving feedback from uses of the Directory.

Attribute accuracy:

The attribute entries were verified and checked in March 2001.

Logical consistency:

Consistancy checks have been directed only at ensuring that all points have a name.
